Winegard Company is a trusted connectivity partner for designing and manufacturing the greatest range of world-class connectivity products and services, including WiFi and 4G LTE, satellite, broadband, video, and over-the-air technology for residential, commercial, and mobile applications. Founder, John Winegard, invented the multi-channel Yagi antenna and since its incorporation in 1953, Winegard has designed more than 1,000 antenna models and has been granted more than 90 U.S. patents. The company's heritage includes recognition by NASA for contributions to the Apollo 11 mission, and the induction of founder John Winegard into the Consumer Electronics Association Hall of Fame.

Challenges

  • Data tenancy security is not enforced in the current Data Lake design. OEMs require their data to be safely secured from access by other tenants (OEMs)
  • The current architecture makes the joining of data across multiple streams complex and time consuming
  • Data lake is not organized for Winegard’s consumption and security needs
  • Not all products and data sources have been on-boarded to the Data Lake for consumption.

Solutions

  • Deployed AWS security best practices for governing data lake on AWS
  • AWS with partnership from Capstone-IS, Datalake was created using OEM tenancy with Kinesis Firehose, S3, Glue, IAM, Cloudwatch, Cloudtrail, security controls and tagging strategy.
  • Capstone-IS developed infrastructure code following Winegard's existing IaC practices.
  • Winegard and AWS aligned on leveraging of existing CI/CD pipelines to create an efficient, compact project deployment timeline
  • Transparent security documentation was developed to gain trust from OEMs storing data in the Data Lake

Results

  • Winegard now has a functioning Data Lake that is able to ingest IoT Data from Winegard’s AWS IoT implementation
  • Has the ability to segment OEM data into separate containers/folders/buckets
  • Has implemented the data lake in a secure way to prevent cross-contamination, employing AWS Security services
  • The Data Lake is now flexible enough to support future data analytics requirements  ex: via Athena, QuickSight, Sage Maker and AI/ML use cases long-term
